Facebook has revealed its top 10 trends in status updates for 2010. The most popular trend is a new acronym for hanging out.
Not to be outdone by Twitter, which released its 2010 trends, Facebook has revealed the top 10 trends among status updates this year. About half of the trends seem to overlap with Twitter, but they are mainly chatter about huge world events like the World Cup and the Haiti earthquake or technology like the iPhone 4 and movies like Inception. Still, there are a few intriguing diversions, most notably a new acronym and a popular song.
Top 10 Facebook trends of 2010:
HMU
World Cup
Movies
iPad and iPhone 4
Haiti
Justin Bieber
Games on Facebook
Mineros/Miners
Airplanes
2011
HMU stands for “hit me up.” Facebook users have begun using the acronym to encourage family and friends to contact them to hang out. The acronym was crept up throughout the last year, increasing from about 1,600 mentions per day at the end of 2009 to more than 80,000 a day at the end of the summer. Once the school year started, mentions of HMU spike heavily every weekend.
Movies were lumped together at number three. According to Facebook’s blog, the most mentioned movies were Toy Story 3, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Inception, Alice in Wonderland, and Iron Man 2 (in that order). Surprisingly, The Social Network did not make the list, despite being one of the most talked about movies. Are people afraid to talk about Mark Zuckerberg on his own network?
The word “airplane” made it on the list. This is almost entirely due to the popular song “Airplanes” by B.o.B. You know, the one that goes “can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars…I could really use a wish right now, wish right now.” That one. Finally, mentions of 2011 were high during 2010. Surprisingly, they spiked on Jan. 1, 2010. Apparently a lot of people were already writing off 2010. 2011 is where it’s at.
And of course, Justin Bieber made the list! The 15 year-old singer is all the rage. Bieber fever, “Baby.”
