Physical disability could not stop Lutfa Akhter, who became paralysed after falling from tree in July, from taking part in sports events organised by the National Association of Sports for the Persons with Disability at the Physical Training Institute at Mohammadpur on Tuesday.
Lutfa, who won a number of prizes in sports and took the Secondary School Certificate examinations in 2010 as a student of the Tangail Bindu Basini School before she had been paralysed, ran the 50m race on wheel chair, one of the 80 events organised for people with disabilities.
More than 325 people on their own and sent by the Centre for Rehabilitation of the Paralysed, CHID and BRAC joined the annual sports event.
Rabbi Ahmed, who has disability since his birth, also a student of Class VIII, finished first in the crutch race. He said he was a bit upset as this year’s event did not have swimming.
‘It is like a get-together. This is for the fourth time I joined the event. I met my old friends and made friends with some others,’ said Kausar, who came from Barisal.
The association has been holding the even for four years.
The prime minister’s social welfare adviser Syed Modasser Ali, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Asif Ibrahim and Asia Pacific Disability Forum chairman, Khandaker Zahurul Alam, attended.
