Impure water has caused diseases to 167 students of Maulana Bhasani Hall of Jahangirnagar University (JU) since last two weeks, though JU authorities put the number at three.
According to the authorities, a significant number of students caught waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, jaundice, and typhoid two weeks back.
Then the water pipe was repaired and tubewell set up for safe drinking water a week ago and most of the students were cured by the time.
“We also have asked the students to drink boiled water from the dormitory canteen,” said Prof Imdadul Islam, acting provost of the hall.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (admin) Prof Forhad Hossain said they visited the hall on Friday after 80 students were reported ill. “But we found only two students sick on the 3rd floor and one on the 2nd floor.”
A list sent by the students to the vice chancellor (VC) yesterday says 81 students have been suffering from jaundice, 48 from dysentery, and 38 from diarrhoea of the 650-bed dormitory.
