The police were in full gear, ready to pounce on the agitating investors on the road in front of the Dhaka Stock Exchange. Investors were ready to throw brickbats on the police as they could not curb their anger after the losses they had borne.
Suddenly the police went into action and started to beat up the aggrieved investors in an effort to disperse them.
One policeman raised his stick to beat a youth but stopped. ‘Go away. I don’t want to beat you. I lost Tk 1,00,000 too,’ he said in agonised reference to the loss he had suffered because of the biggest crash in the share market.
The authorities deployed a large contingent of police in the last two days to stop the violent protests of indignant investors in Motijheel. The lawmen swooped on the investors and journalists though many of them shared their anger at suffering losses in the stock market. ‘A large number of police, RAB and army personnel have invested in the capital market. The current fall has not spared them as well,’ said an official of a brokerage house.
