Barisal City Corporation on Wednesday launched a work plan to ensure basic rights of children and make them good citizens to achieve the millennium development goals.
BCC chief executive officer Nikhil Chandra Das presided over the programme held at Barisal Circuit House.
Barisal mayor Shawkat Hossain Hiron, UNICEF country representative Carel de Rooy, AL lawmaker Talukdar Md Yunus, Barisal divisional commissioner Abu Md Rahamatul Munim, deputy inspector general of police Binoy Krishna Bala, Barisal Metropolitan Police commissioner Abdur Rahim, SBMCH director Abdur Rashid, UNICEF divisional representative AHM Toufiquzzaman, district children affairs officer Pankaj Roy Chowdhury, among others, addressed the programme.
The mayor, placing the 54-point programme in seven sectors, said the theme of making the Barisal city a child-friendly city was first discussed in a meeting observing ‘children rights week’ in 2008.
It was later developed on the same occasion in 2009 and a memoir was prepared and presented in February 2010 and the work plan was prepared by consolidating the suggestions from the workshops held on August 10, 2010 to turn Barisal city into a child-friendly city.
The sector-wise programmes included child education, child health, child safety, water and sanitation, child recreation and manifestation, environment and disaster management and governance, management and coordination.
In the work-plan it was observed that the Barisal Metropolitan City could not be transformed into ideopolis without ensuring children’s rights.
