The nation will observe the 42nd historic Mass Upsurge Day today to commemorate the valiant sons of the soil who sacrificed their lives during the movement.
On this day in 1969, students and people waged a strong movement against the then Pakistani autocratic regime of Ayub Khan. The movement turned into a mass upsurge following the martyrdom of Motiur Rahman, a student of class IX of Nabakumar Institute in the city.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a message urged all to work unitedly to free Bangladesh from hunger and poverty, making the country a happy and prosperous abode for all.
In a separate message, Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia called upon people to work together for protecting the country’s independence, sovereignty and democracy, and ensuring fundamental and human rights of people.
