The Chittagong City Corporation on Tuesday brought out a ship procession in the city, marking upcoming World Cup Cricket 2011, with a view to spreading enthusiasm among the city dwellers.
The procession was brought out from Sadarghat terminal at 11:00am and ended at Patenga seaport.
A total of 8 ships, 50 Shampans, 3 high-speed boats took part in the programme.
Fewer than 200 students from different schools participated in the procession, as well.
A cultural programme, with the performance of singer Shubir Nandi, was also held at the end of the procession.
The Chittagong mayor, Manjur Alam, while inaugurating the procession, said world cup cricket competition brought a unique chance for the people of Bangladesh to project their history, heritage and culture before the people from across the world.
He also vowed that CCC would also bring out a road show in the city within shortest possible time, marking the event.
Former minister Abdullah Al Noman, also Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader, remained the city dwellers that the journey of national cricket began from Chittagong as the first national cricket team was formed with the players from the city.
India’s assistant high commissioner in Bangladesh Shomnath Ghosh expressed his hope that World Cup Cricket competition would be a get-together for the people of whole sub-continent.
The rally was attended by among others PCL chairman AJM Nasir Uddin, former vice-chancellor to Chittagong University Alamgir Mohammed Shirajuddin, Chittagong unit of Bangladesh Communist Party president Mrinal Chowdhury and Chittagong unit of Bangladesh Workers Party general secretary Amrita Barua.
