Speakers in a discussion on Friday in the Rajshahi city called on the government to constitutionally recognise the ethnic minority communities of the country.
They also demanded a separate land commission like that of the Chittagong Hill Tracts to restore the land rights of the plain land ethnic minorities.
Participants in the meeting protested at the eviction of the minority families from their ancestral land in different parts of the Rajshahi division, Naogaon in particular.
The government should take immediate action to stop the perpetrators, urged the speakers, adding that the repressors belong to some of the locally influential quarters.
The meeting was organised by Jatiya Adibashi Parishad at its office.
Jatiya Adibashi Parishad president Anil Marandy, general secretary Rabindra Nath Saren, organising secretary Bimal Chandra Razoar, director of Barindra Unnayan Prachesta Faijullah Choudhury, coordinator of BLAST advocate Abdul Samad, human rights activist Devashish Pramanik Debu and leaders of different political parties spoke on the occasion.
