The Rajshahi Water and Sewerage Authority started its work formally on Thursday.
Rajshahi mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, as the chief gust, inaugurated the inception.
Khairuzzaman, while addressing the programme, said RCC had already taken short- and long-term plans to meet the water demand of the city dwellers.
He disclosed that the city corporation was likely to set up more than 15 garment factories in the city and its suburbs to eliminate unemployment crisis.
He also informed the guests that RCC had sent a letter to the communication ministry to construct mixed-gauge railway to bring an end to communication problems of the city people over travelling to other cities.
Chaired by Rezaul Haque the programme was also addressed, among others, by RCC chief executive officer Aazahar Ali, Rajshahi WASA executive engineer Parvez Mahmud, Workers Party of Bangladesh Rajshahi city unit secretary Liakat Ali Liku, Jatiya Party general secretary Joha Sarker, Rajshahi Muktijoddha Sangsad commander Saidur Rahman.
Rajshahi WASA started its operation from the Paba Water Treatment Plant building in the city with a government allocation of Tk 4 crore.
The establishment ministry joint secretary, Rezaul Haque, joined Rajshahi WASA as its first managing director.
A total of 205 staff of RCC’s water section had been shifted to the WASA, said RCC sources.
