Maria Shriver has filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger after 25 years of marriage.
The former television journalist and Kennedy family heiress cited irreconcilable differences in papers she signed two weeks ago.
The news comes almost two months after Schwarzenegger and Shriver separated when she discovered that the former governor of California had fathered a secret love child with a member of household staff.
Shriver offered no details about the breakup in the filing, nor did she list an official date for their split.
It is believed that the couple had no prenuptial agreement, meaning that Schwarzenegger’s earnings from movies such as Predator and Terminator 2 will be divided with his estranged wife.
The pair have four children, and Shriver is said to be seeking joint custody of their two teenage sons, aged 13 and 17.
Divorce proceedings are expected to be handled behind closed doors, and though Shriver is seeking spousal support, the amount will be determined later, through a settlement or by a judge.
