At least 40 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit were injured in clashes between the two rival groups of the organization yesterday turning the campus into a virtual war field. To avert any further clashes, BCL central committee extended another one month ban on JU BCL committee.
The injured students, including critically wounded Sagor, Shohan, Shohel, Sumon, Shovo, Aminur, were shifted to the Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital for treatment.
The incident erupted when some activists of BCL loyal to Azibur-Ayon went to attend their classes at 10 am and swooped on activists of Sohel Parvez-Joni group, another faction of JU BCL that leaves two activists injured.
Later, the activist of Sohel Parvez-Jony being equipped with arms attacked Moulana Bhashani and Sheikh Mujib Hall. At least 30 rounds of bullets were fired during the clashes which injured at least 30 activists of both groups. Police lobbed tear gas cells to disperse the clash.
The clashes spread across the campus creating panic among the general students. Students of Moulana Bhashani and Sheikh Mujib Hall remained confined as the other group took position at the entrances of the Halls. The unruly BCL activists ransacked the residence of JU proctor, senior teachers and also demanded removal of JU VC.
BCL leader Azibur Rahman said, “To keep our group away from 18th February BCL reunion, they attacked our activists.”
BCL JU president Shohel Parvej said, a section of vested quarter with the support of BNP teachers is hatching conspiracy to tarnish the image of the BCL.
The university authority was holding an emergency meeting to take decision on the incident till this report was filed.
Huge law enforcers have been deployed on the campus, which now remains tense as the two rival groups still on their respective position equipped with sticks, rods and fire arms.
The Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association at an emergency meeting demanded punishment of the persons involved in the incident.
