“I am aware of this corruption”: Attorney General
Staff Correspondent
Attorney General office has become a den of corruption due to a section of uns-crupulous law officers and staffs engaged in taking bribe from litigants and manipulating cases.
Since long a section of unscrupulous law officers have been indulging in corruption by way of taking bribe from litigants and remaining silent during he-aring without prosecution.
Admitting corruption by some law officers and staffs, Attorney General Mahbu-bey Alam said “I am aware of it. I am knowledgeable about how much corruption was committed previously and is being committed presently. Now I am taking such steps so that this department may get rid of corruption.”
He said very few new law officers have been appointed after assuming office by Awami League government but more number of law officers including Assistant, Deputy and Additional Attor-ney Generals will replace the existing law officers to ensure honesty and professionalism in the attorney service.
He added that in appointing new law officers among the practicing lawyers, their honesty, integrity and merit will be given preference based on their previous bar records.
Explaining reasons for appointing new law officers, he said “In fact, a new government has some policy. So the government tries to appoint such persons as law officers who are suitable to implement its policy. More over, a new Attorney Gen-eral tries to select such advocates as law officers who will be as competent in their duties as required by him. I am making assessment as to who may be appointed as law officers to ensure integrity and professionalism of this office.”
A source in Attorney General office said Awami League government has appointed 36 new DAGs while eight DAGs appointed by previous government are continuing their service. Of eight DAGs, Zainul Abedin and Mozammel Haque have given an intimation to resign soon. Another source said among the remaining six law officers only honest and competent ones will be allowed to continue their service. He added that only one previously appointed AAG named Shafiqul Alam Mahbub has resigned while rest 57 are likely to be replaced.
