The Awami League-led government is likely to place the national budget for the financial 2009–2010 in the parliament on June 11.
‘The national budget is likely to be placed on June 11,’ the deputy speaker, Shawkat Ali, told reporters after a meeting of the business advisory committee of the parliament on Sunday.
It will be the first budget of the incumbent government.
The speaker, Abdul Hamid, presided over the third meeting of the committee which discussed the duration of the current session.
The meeting entrusted the speaker with setting the duration of the current session when the house is expected to pass several bills.
The chief whip, Abdus Shahid, however, said the session would continue till the first week of April.
The parliament resumed its session on Sunday after a 10-day recess.
The lawmakers for the first time had to enter the parliament building through an archway which was set in accordance with a decision of the authorities concerned to heighten security of the parliament complex.
Sunday’s sitting dealt with businesses such as regular question-answer session, call attention notices and discussion on thanks motion on the presidential address.
The session was adjourned on March 5 for 10 days to avoid calling another session before the budget session.
This is for the third time after January 25 the working days of the first session of the ninth parliament were changed.
The business advisory committee, headed by the speaker, at its first meeting on January 28 decided to continue with the session until February 26.
But the second meeting of the committee on February 25 decided to continue with the session until February 12.
According to the constitution, the parliament must sit within every 60 days. According to parliamentary practices, budget session starts early June every year.
