The speakers of a function held on Wednesday underlined the need for sustainable development of livestock in char areas through providing and ensuring the services by Government and Non government organisation. “Rearing of cows, goats and sheep is very profitable and it can play an important role to alleviate poverty and eradicate monga facing the char dwellers and to meet the demand of protein in the country as well”.
They said this in a workshop entitled ‘Duties in the Development of Livestock in char areas’ in the training centre of a local non-government organization at Nashratpur under sadar upazila in the district on April 29. Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) organized the workshop in cooperation with River Basin Programme (RBP) of Oxfam-GB Bangladesh. District Livestock Officer Dr. M. Mokarram Hossain addressed it as the chief guest.
Sadar upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Anisur Rahman, Fulchhari upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Mostafa Kamal, Lecturers of Livestock Training Institute Dr. M. Jahanur Rahman and Dr. Ahsan Habib participated in the workshop as resource persons. Describing the cows, goats and sheep as valuable assets of the char dwellers the experts assured all of giving their departmental services properly and devotedly to encourage the livestock farmers to rear those in the char areas.
The livestock experts also elaborately narrated the feed management, control of contagious disease of cows, goats and sheep and their preservation at the time of disaster particularly flood. Abdul Kader, an inmate of Kunderpara char under Mollarchar union of sadar upazila in the district in his speech urged the authorities concerned to impart training for the livestock farmers to make them self dependent by expanding the rearing of cows, goats and sheep in the char areas further Presided over by general secretary of Gaibandha press club Abu Jafar Sabu, the function was also addressed, among others, by Project Manager of RBP Protim a Chakrobartee, Programme Manager of GUK Mohirul Islam tusher and Journalist M. Shahiduzzaman.
More than 35 livestock farmers of char areas of the district, public representatives and NGO workers participated in the workshop.
