Two young Bangladeshis living in Barcelona, Spain, are among the winners of this year’s El Gordo Christmas lottery, receiving 3 lakh euros worth Tk 2.9 crore each.
They are Jamal Sahid, 18, and Shalim Ahmed, 29. Jamal, a cook, plans to open a restaurant with the money, reports a news agency.
The incident caused quite a stir as different Spanish newspapers on Tuesday published the picture of one of the youths showing his bank savings book.
FACUA, a consumers’ organisation, was however more interested in the entries in the youth’s savings book that date back before he received the winnings. These entries show that he had paid the bank a total of 22.93 euros as the charge for six transactions after opening the account in February with only 50 euros.
“This shows clearly how banks profit even from people with very small financial means,” a FACUA spokesperson said.
“El Gordo”, meaning “the fat one”, is a Christmas tradition in Spain dating back to 1812. It is designed to give as many people as possible a windfall before the holidays.
