Moulvi Bazar based troupe Manipuri Theatre has organised a four-day theatre festival to celebrate Bishu, the
New Year celebrations of the Manipuri community.
Beginning on Thursday, the troupe will stage five plays at its own studio theatre named Natmandop at Kamalganj in Moulvi Bazar.
Two theatre performances were staged on the opening day. Joyti Sinha performed in the monodrama Kohe Birangana, a dramatic adaptation of Michael Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s epic Birangana.
It was followed by a dramatic presentation of Buru Chandi Das’ Sri Krishna Kirtan featuring the divine love between Radha and Lord Krishna by the troupe members.
Today the troupe will stage Smritykumar Singha’s play Dhabjo Mistirir Maron, which features the miserable life of a mason.
Shubhashish Sinha’s play Ingal Adhar Pala, featuring the struggle for survival of a Manipuri traditional instrumentalist in the era of globalisation, will be staged tomorrow.
On the Pahela Baishakh celebrations, which is also the last day of the festival, the troupe will stage Lakkhi Geethanak, a dramatic presentation of Tagore’s story Lakkhir Parikkha in Manipuri language.
Shubhashish Sinha has directed all of the theatre performances.
‘After the show of the concluding day, we will present a traditional Manipuri sport named Singna as part of the cultural programme marking the Pahela Baishakh,’ Sinha, who is also the chief of the troupe told New Age.
