Dhaka based troupe Theatre Art Unit will stage Amina Sundari today at the Chittagong Shilpakala Academy as part of the ongoing Nandimukh Theatre Festival organised by the troupe marking its 22nd founding anniversary.
Written by SM Solaiman and directed by Rokeya Rafique Baby, Amina Shundari has been adopted from the 300 year old folklore of Nasar Malum and Bhelua Shundari. Two themes are simultaneously focused in the play. On one hand love, sacrifice and affection of a woman is depicted while the dark reality of the patriarchal society —deception and exploitation to woman—is also highlighted. Amina’s husband Nasar is a sailor by profession he sails off to Burma (modern-day Myanmar). While Amina waits for his return, she gets harassed by the lecherous people around her. The crisis builds up while Nasar, on the other hand, marries another woman in Burma called Ekhin Shundari.
Theater Art Unit artiste Kamruzzaman Millat, Mahbub Selim, Dipta Rakkhit, Sujan, Anik Mahin Eka, Prasanta Halder, Tania Chowdhury, Ferdous Amin Biplob, Abul Hasnat, Saif Sumon, Swadhin Shah, Aminul Bari Ejaj, Chandan Reza and Arif Sakil are the actors of the play.
