Dhaka audience got the real flavour of the traditional patachira (scroll painting) on Friday at Alliance Française de Dhaka as the troupe led by Binoy Krishna Bishwash and Arun Das presented patagaan based on the narratives of
Nikhil Chandra Das’ patachitra.
The exhibition titled ‘The Dream’s Wear’ features patachitras by four renowned traditional patacitra artists Shambhu Acharya from Munshiganj, Nikhil Chandra Das from Norail, Sushanta Pal from Rajshahi and Nazir Hossain from Dinajpur.
In the rural areas, popular ballads are also expressed in this genre of artwork and presented in villages by some singer-painter groups. The presenting of those parts of ballad is known as patagaan. Some of these are very deep-rooted and found in Brahmavaivarta Puran, writings of Patanjoli, Buddhist ritual text, Jain religious book, even in the drama of Kalidas, Banvotto and Bisakha Datta.
The week-long exhibition at AFD also displays attires designed by poet and folklorist Nazmin Mortuza. In her designed attires, she primarily used the motif of artworks of these traditional pata artists. Her endeavour was to present those motifs in the country-made cloths through block print, embroidery and screen print.
The week-long show has been organised by VIAAN, the creative garment industry initiator, which intends to make transformation of garment-industry into a more creative sector with the inspiration of folk-art.
The organisers believe such initiatives would help revive the folk-art of Bangladesh from near extinction. Eminent Artist Qayyum Chowdhury inaugurated the exhibition as the chief guest on Friday.
This exhibition will be open to all until Thursday, May 16, 2013 in La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka.
