The Dhaka South City Corporation will seek from the government fund for repair work in the Purana Paltan, Mothijheel Shapla Square, Bijaynagar and Gulistan areas left devastated
by activists of Hefajat-e-Islam early Monday night.
The DSCC chief executive officer, Mohammad Ansar Ali Khan, told New Age on Tuesday that property of the corporation to the tune of Tk 5 crore was damaged.
‘We do not have fund to repair the damage and this week we will seek fund from the local government, rural development and corporative ministry,’ he said.
The Islamists unleashed a reign of terror in the downtown Dhaka — from Purana Paltan to Mothijheel Shapla Square and from Bijaynagar to Gulistan — on Sunday.
According to the corporation, the damaged property includes road median, median’s grills, electric signal system, footpaths, electronic poles, curve stones, brick structures and trees.
New Age found that over 150 trees felled or uprooted and several electric poles and solar panels damaged on the road stretch from the Purana Paltan crossing to the Naya Paltan BNP office area.
‘Some of the trees on the road stretch from Bijaynagar to Paltan were over 15-year-old. How can we repair that damage,’ asked the chief executive officer.
He also expressed hope that within this month they would be able to start the repairs.
DSCC chief waste management officer Mohammad Anamul Haque said about 2,000 cleaners had been engaged to clean the debris from these areas on Monday and they completed their work by noon.
