A total of 11,54,778 students passed this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and its equivalent examinations, registering 89.03 per cent success rate, 2.66 per cent higher than the previous year. As many as 12,97,034 students appeared for the exam.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Thursday announced the results of the SSC and equivalent examinations, which began on February 3 and continued till March 5. Of the successful students, 5,93,838 are boys and 5,60,940 girls, showing that boys performed better than girls. A total of 91,226 students obtained the highest Grade Point Average — GPA-5 — an increase of 9,014 over last year. Among the GPA-5 achievers, 52,392 are boys and 38,834 girls.
Earlier, the Education Minister handed over a copy of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban around 10am.
Among the 10 general education boards, the Rajshahi Board outperformed other boards, with 94.03 per cent success rate. The Dhaka Board had 87.31 per cent, Chittagong Board 88.48 per cent, Comilla Board 90.41, Jessore Board 92.62 per cent, Sylhet Board 88.96 per cent, Barisal Board 88.63 per cent and the Dinajpur Board had 90.60 per cent success rate. Besides, 89.13 per cent passed in the Madrasa Education Board and 81.13 per cent in the Technical Education Board.
A total of 8,85,891 out of 9,87,417 examinees under 10 general education boards passed the SSC examination with 89.72 pass rate, that is 3.8 per cent higher than last year. Of them, 77,381 obtained GPA-5, showing an increase of 12,129 over last year.
The pass percentage in the Science Group is 94.95, Humanities 85.56 and Business Education 90.93. A total of 277 out of 285 students who took the test at seven centres abroad, passed the SSC with a success rate of 97.19 per cent.
Under the Madrasa Education Board, 1,97,199 students out of 2,21,257 passed the Dakhil Examination this year with 89.13 per cent success rate. Of the successful students, 9,673 secured GPA-5.
In the Technical Board, 81.13 per cent passed the exam. Of the 88,360 students, as many as 71,688 cleared the exam. Of them, 3,524 students scored GPA-5.
Under the Dhaka Board, among the top 20 institutions, the Ideal School and College, Motijheel, secured the first position in the SSC examination by obtaining 96.75 points. It is followed by the Viqarunnesa Noon School, RAJUK Uttara Model High School and College, Dhaka Residential Model College, Mirzapur Cadet College, Tangail, Mymensingh Girls’ Cadet College, Motijheel Government Girls’ High School, Mymensingh Zilla High School, Motijheel Government Boys’ High School, Holy Cross Girls’ High School, Milestone College, Turag, Cantonment Public School, Government Laboratory High School, St. Joseph High School, Monipur High School, Bangladesh International School, Mohammadpur Preparatory Higher Secondary School, Vidyamayee Government Girls’ High School, Mymensingh, Bindu Basini Government Boys’ High School, Tangail and the Shaheed Bir Uttam Lt. Anwar Girls College.
The Bogra Zilla School took the first position among the 20 best institutions under the Rajshahi Board, while the Comilla Zilla School under the Comilla Board, Khulna Zilla School under the Jessore Board, Collegiate School under the Chittagong Board, Barisal Cadet College under the Barisal Board, Sylhet Cadet College under the Sylhet Board, Amena-baki Residential Model School, Dinajpur under the Dinajpur Board, Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasa, Tongi under the Madrasa Board and the UCEP Dhaka Technical School under the Technical Education Board ranked top.
After receiving the results of all 10 education boards, the Prime Minister announced the results of the Dinajpur Education Board through teleconference with students, teachers and officials.
The Education Minister called upon the Opposition political parties to keep in mind the future of the new generation before launching any agitation or movement.
“The Opposition shouldn’t do anything that pushes the future generation towards destruction and puts undue pressure on the minds of examinees,” he said.
Nahid also said that because of the disruptive activities of the Opposition, the SSC examination date had to be changed as many as five times. He lauded the students who succeeded in the JSC and the JDC (class VIII and equivalent) examinations for the first time.
The minister said the quality of education has improved as the government introduced the creative question methodology in the SSC examination. He said the government has prepared a list of top 10 schools at district levels to encourage competition within the schools.
The results can be known from the education boards’ website and examination centres, SMS and e-mail.
Education secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, chairmen of education boards and senior officials of the Education Ministry, among others, were present on the occasion.
Talking to The Independent, Prof Dr Shahin Ara Begum, principal of the Motijheel Ideal School and College, said the school ranked top because of the joint efforts of parents and teachers. “Our teachers taught the students with passion and care and that made all the difference,” she said.
A total of 1,049 student out of 1,195 got GPA-5, she said. “Students, parents and teachers are delighted. Last year, our school was in the third position,” she added.
Ratul, Moin and Mugdho of the Motijheel Ideal School and College sought the blessings of the people so that they can achieve their goal in future.
Prakash, a GPA-5 achiever, said: “I want to be an engineer, so I have to secure GPA-5 in the HSC examination also.”
Manju Ara, principal of the Viqarunnisa School and College, said: “We are happy. Last year we obtained the fourth place, but this year we secured the second position. If GPA-5 is taken into account, we are in the No. 1 position. A total of 1,166 students out of 1,341 got GPA-5. Our school’s overall results are good. As per the old criteria, we are still the best.” However, she welcomed the new criteria.
GPA-5 achievers Raha, Najnin and Nisa of Viqarunnisa Noon were delighted and expressed gratitude for their teachers. An elated Ria Moni said she would like to be a doctor.
