Priceless paintings and sketches bearing testament to Rabindranath Tagore’s talent as an artist have been accommodated at a group exhibition at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakaa Academy.
Replicas of 45 paintings done by Rabindranath Tagore are on display at the show organised by the academy marking the 152nd birth anniversary of the poet. The group exhibition also features 130 artworks dedicated to the Nobel laureate poet by 130 contemporary Bangladeshi artists.
The replicas testify that Tagore was apt in creating artworks in different mediums.
Some of the displayed self-portraits by Tagore portray different features of life of the Nobel laureate.
A mixed media painting titled Landscape by Tagore features serenity of a crop field in the forest. Tagore creates a mysterious ambience in his watercolour painting titled Figure in Darkness that portrays a female silhouette, which is partly visible in the dark milieu. His dexterity in using pastel colours is evident in the painting Portrait of A Lady, in which, Tagore depicted a female figure dance posture. A dancing girl happened to be the subject of Tagore’s another artwork done in pen and ink.
The exhibition earned an additional dimension with the vibrant paintings created by both renowned and talented artists of the country in order to pay a tribute to the poet. The artists have captured the characters of the poet’s literature and moments from the poet’s life in their paintings done in different mediums.
Qayyum Chowdhury’s colourful artwork depicts the prominent figure of Rabindranath Tagore against a backdrop of blue sky with birds, green fields and boats floating on a river.
Rafiqun Nabi’s artwork, on the other hand, captures the poet in moments of contemplation during writing. Tagore is sitting in an armchair and scribbling with a pen on paper in the painting. Birds, trees, butterfly and human beings can also be seen in bubbles situated right above Tagore’s head revealing what the poet might be thinking during writing.
The poet and his creation Nandini, a prominent character of the play Raktokarobi, has been depicted by Zahed A Chowdhury in his acrylic painting Rabindranath O Taar Nandini. The painting shows Nandini standing on the palm of the poet.
Kadambari Devi, the sister-in-law of Tagore, has been portrayed by Anupam Das in his oil painting Kadambari—Paripurna Akankha. The artist has visualized Rabindranath reciting his verses for Kadambari in this painting.
Rabindranath Tagore’s sharp eyes that were keenly observant have been captured in Oprotiroddho Eyes, an acrylic painting by Swarnali Mitra Rini. The artist has successfully given a kind of hypnotic stance to the eyes of the poet in the portrait.
The exhibition that commenced on May 8, will remain open to the public from 11:00am to 8:00pm till tomorrow.
