Gender-sensitive media reporting is important to free the society from gender disparity to establish rights of women, speaker said at a journalists’ meeting held in the
General Public Library conference hall at Rajshahi on Saturday.
They expressed the view that the professional newsmen should take the responsibility of highlighting the gender-sensitive issues to eliminate existing barriers to establishing gender parity.
The observations came at the meeting of the Gender Development Journalists Forum.
Partner Sangstha, a women rights-based development organisation, under its ‘Gender Development Project’ hosted the meeting aiming at sensitising the journalists how to expose the gender sensible issues through media.
During the project-briefing session, Alima Khatun Lima, director (programme) of Partner, said gender-based reporting is very helpful to draw attention of the policymakers to the plights of the womenfolk.
‘We want to eliminate gender discrimination for further women empowerment,’ she said, adding that the media participation is needed to attain the cherished goal.
Akbarul Hassan Millat, president of Rajshahi Union of Journalists emphasised the need for large-scale gender equality for national development.
He mentioned that the issues of the women empowerment together with addressing women’s vulnerability are completely dependent on the substantial gender equality. ‘Media can play a vital role in this regard’.
Among others, project coordinator Niamul Bashir, gender development officer Nilufar Ahmed and trainer Munira Parveen also spoke on the occasion.
