Poll set to be held after 2 days amid unprecedented security

Election countdown
Poll set to be held after 2 days amid unprecedented security
Ban on campaign will be imposed from tomorrow midnight
Staff Correspondent
A festive mood prevails across the country as the stage is now set to hold the much-awaited national parliament election on December 29 (Monday) amid unprecedented security measures.
The candidates from different political parties including Awami League led-grand alliance and BNP-led four-party alliance continued their last hour electioneering before the ban on the campaign which will come into force from Sunday evening, 32 hours before the voting.
As last moment electioneering on the part of chiefs of country’s two major political parties, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia are set to address the nation today and tomorrow respectively in the national TV on the eve of the parliamentary election.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission is sending all election materials and ballot papers to different parts of the country but in sending those materials the commission is giving priority to the remote areas first.
Salient feature of this year’s elections campaign is that it is going on peacefully across the country almost without any election violence including chase, counter chase, injury, murder, damaging vehicles, ransacking residential houses, arson attack and intimidating minorities.
Unlike past– many independent and party derailed candidates like Mannan Bhuiyan are contesting the coming general poll from different seats across the country.
Most of the candidates contesting the national parliamentary election from the constituencies in the capital are hailing from different places outside Dhaka. Only two contestant of Dhaka 7 Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu (BNP-led alliance) and Mostafa Kamal Mohiuddin (Awami League- led grand alliance) are from the locality.
In Dhaka 4, Abdul Hai (4 party alliance) and Sanjida Khatun (grand alliance) are from Munshiganj. In Dhaka 8, Rashed Khan Menon (grand alliance), Habibur Nabi Sohel (4 party alliance) and Maj Gen (retd) Ibrahim (Kallyan Party) are hailing from Barisal, North Bengal and Chittagong respectively. In Dhaka 10, AKM Rahmatullah (grand alliance), MA Quiyum (BNP) and Mozammel Haque (independent) are original resident of Dhaka. In Dhaka 11, Sahabuddin (BNP led alliance), Maj (retd) Mannan and Syed Hossain are all from Noakhali except Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal (Awami League led grand alliance) who is local. In Dhaka 12, Advocate Khandker Mahbubuddin (4 party alliance) and Barrister Fazle Noor Tapos (grand alliance) are from Gopalganj. In Dhaka 13, Jahangir Kabir Nanok (grand alliance) and Moazzem Hossain Alal (4 party alliance) are of Barisal. In Dhaka 15, Kamal Ahmed Majumder (grand alliance) and Hamidullah (4 party alliance) are from Noakhali and Gazipur respectively. In Dhaka 16, Rafiqul Islam (4 party alliance) and Prosika chief Quazi Faruk Ahmed (independent) are both hailing from Comilla except Ilias Mollah (grand alliance) who is local.
Besides, centring the ensuing parliamentary election security measures is going to be beefed up as told by DMP Commissioner Naim Ahmed after holding meeting of police high ups yesterday.
“There is no information in our hand on act of sabotage to disrupt the election. But police have already taken highest security measures to tackle any troublesome situation. Our security arrangements is enough and we will ensure security of all polling centers during election through deployment of security personnel,” the city police chief Naim Ahmed assured.
He said “We are taking all steps and precautions to avoid any criminal attack and any move to foil election. Preparation of perpetrating any untoward incident will be resisted. As part of precaution, all residential hotels and other places will be raided ahead of poll.”
Talking to The Bangladesh Today, leaders of major political parties said the more the poll day is coming nearer the more tension is occurring as to election results and as to which party will win the election.
