National Tree Plantation campaign begins today
World Environment Day is going to be observed in the country as elsewhere across the world today, with a call to reduce food waste and save the environment from degradation.
The theme of the day ‘Think, Eat and Save’ is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign.
UN Food and Agriculture Organisation said every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted, which is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.
At the same time, one in every seven people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.
Given this enormous imbalance in lifestyles and resultant devastating effects on environment, this year’s World Environment Day encourages people to become more aware of the environmental impact of the food choices they make and empowers them to make informed decisions.
To observe the day, the Ministry of Environment and Forest and different environmental organisations have chalked out programmes like fair, tree fair, essay competition, debate and art competition.
National dailies are going to publish supplements while radio and television channels will air special progammmes marking the day.
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, is scheduled to inaugurate the World Environment Day Programme and the National Tree Plantation Campaign at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital today.
The prime minister will also hand over ‘National Environment Award’ and ‘Bangabandhu Award for Wildlife Conservation’ at the programme.
A total 27 individuals in 10 categories will receive ‘Prime Minister’s National Award’ for tree plantation.
