Rights activists on Friday demanded establishment of a full-fledged burn institute with all modern facilities to ensure service for patients with burn injuries.
They also demanded that the government should set up a burn unit in all government medical college hospitals to treat the patients at the divisional level. They made the demands at a rally organised by Citizens Solidarity in front Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The activists said the treatment of burn patients was very expensive and the number of burn experts is very small.
Treatment of the burn patients is not available at all the hospitals, which has put an extra burden on the DMCH, they said.
According to the DMCH burn unit officials, on an average 350 patients are admitted to the 100-bed unit in winter and 250 patients in summer.
Columnist Syed Abul Moksud urged the government to be ‘sensitive’ to lessen the pain of the burn patients.
The speakers said though the government increased the bed from 50 to 100 in the institute in 2010 to meet the demand, the logistics were not increased in proportion to the bed number.
They patients at the unit have to purchase medicine, bandage or even saline.
They also demanded increasing allocation for the unit.
Among others, Citizens Solidarity general secretary Sharifuzzaman Sharif was present.
