Chittagong Port Authority on Monday withdrew the penal rents imposed on empty containers that had been remaining dumped at port yards causing space congestion, port officials said.
CPA secretary Syed Farhad Uddin said the decision was taken
at a meeting of the authority on Monday.‘The port authority had increased the penal rents by four times in a bid to discourage dumping at the jetties. As the situation has improved with the delivery of a large number of empty containers from the port yards, the penal rents were withdrawn,’ he said.
CPA acting director (traffic) Moshiur Rahman Beg said that penal rents had been increased by four times on May 16.
‘The port authority took the step to force the owners to get their containers released from the port yards and ease congestion,’ he said.
‘The number of empty containers piled up at port yards rose to over 6,000 early last month, but the figure came down to as low as 3,200 on Monday,’ he added.
