Filmmaker Badal Rahman’s third death anniversary was jointly observed by Moviyana Film Society and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy through a film screening and discussion on Tuesday at
the conference room of the academy.
Rahman, till his death, remained proactive in the arena of film and culture. He was the president of Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh until he died in 2010.
A documentary on Badal Rahman featuring his works and lifetime contribution to filmdom was screened on the day.
Produced by Moviyana Film Society, directed by Belayet Hossain Mamun and Saiful Islam Journal, the documentary titled Pathikrit (Torchbearer) featured a recorded self-narrative by Rahman made just three months before his death along with his photographs and video footages of his home and workplaces.
Rahman’s full-length feature film for children- Emiler Goenda Bahini (1979)- garnered huge popularity and eventually earned him a national film award in five categories. His other noted films are Pratyasha Surja (1974), Kathal Gurir Bagan (1998) and Chhana O Muktijuddha (2008).
This year’s Badal Rahman commemorative lecture featured another prominent contemporary filmmaker Tareque Masud.
Sabrina Sultana Chowdhury, film researcher and assistant professor of Journalism and Mass Communication department of Dhaka University, presented her paper ‘Tareque Masud-er Bhabna: Matir Moyna ebong Runway Chalachitrer bislession’ [Thoughts of Tareque Masud: analysis of Matir Moyna and Runway].
The presenter analysed the films Matir Moyna and Runaway and managed to show that Tareque Masud was fascinated, in fact obsessed, to present the diverse impacts of Islam as a religion on the people of this country. Film critics Syed Salauddin Zaki, Dr Sajedul Aowal and Dr Jakir Hossain Raju joined the discussion session on the paper.
The programme ended with screening of another documentary titled Phera(homeward journey) on Tareque Masud, produced by Catherine Masud and directed by Prasoon Rahman.
