Chittagong, the country’s second biggest city, celebrates its 150th anniversary
with a series of festivities beginning today.
Chittagong City Corporation took a three-day
programme to celebrate the port city’s founding.‘The preparations are complete,’ said mayor Monjur Alam.
‘We want to show the port city and the city corporation,’ said the mayor.
The city has been beautified for the occasion, the city corporation’s chief executive officer Ali Ahmed told New Age.
The CCC Building has been illuminated.
All the academic institutions rund by the city corporation have also be decorated and illuminated.
Unauthorized billboards have been removed and vendor eviction from sidewalks is in progress, said Ali Ahmed.
Chittaong Port Authority, Chittagong Custom House and other offices have been requested to illuminate their buildings, he said.
The city corporation would hold a rally at M.A.Aziz stadium this afternoon, seminar at a community centre on Saturday.
It would host a traditional feast locally called ‘mezban’ to be followed by a get together of corporation officials and employees, said officials.
Syed Asraful Islam,minister for local government and rural development is scheduled to attend the seminar as chief guest. Afsarul Amin Chopwdhurty,minister for primary and mass education,Hasan Mahmud, minister for forest and environment, Dilip Barua, minister for industry and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, state minister for LGRD will attend as special guests.
Established in 1863, Chittagong Municipality was upgraded as municipal corporation in 1982.
In 1990, it was made a city corporation.
