The USA based Bangladeshi cultural organisation Priyo Bangla staged experimental theatre Jiboner Gaan recently at
Thomas Jefferson School, Arlington, Virginia in the US.
Above 60 Bangladeshi Americans who have been brought up in the US performed in the play. The production, supported by the county government, was dedicated to the victims of the Savar tragedy.Priyo Lal Karmakar, a young organiser of cultural events and a resident of Washington DC, directed the play in dance-music-dialogue form usually presented by the traditional artistes of Bangladesh.
Jiboner Gaan also follows the typical storyline of traditional folktales of Bangladesh.
Songs and poems by Tagore, Nazrul, DL Roy, Lalon, Hason Raja, Radha Raman and Shah Karim and Sachin Dev Burman have been used.
Editing and scripting has been done by Sudip Chakroborthy, a theatre department teacher of Dhaka University, who is quite well-known in the Bangladeshi theatre arena.
‘I have directed several plays for international platforms but this happens to be the first time I have written the script for a drama being staged at a foreign country. I hope it will be a success,’ Sudip told New Age.
‘It is amazing that people who live abroad want entertainment through shows that reflect their own heritage and culture. If everybody makes an effort, it won’t be difficult for us to keep our culture alive in a foreign country’, he added.
