Only 10pc allocated for education
The Dhaka University syndicate on Thursday for the first time in its history approved the annual budget of the university for the fiscal year 2013-14 as the authorities
failed to hold the annual meeting of the senate.
Usually the university senate every year approves the annual budget but as the highest decision-making body does not have the required number of members to fulfil the quorum, it failed to hold the annual meeting where the budget is approved, claimed a section of teachers.
The total budget is estimated at Tk 314.50 crore that was Tk 301.63 crore in the last fiscal.
The syndicate members approved the budget in an emergency syndicate meeting, chaired by the vice-chancellor, AAMS Arefin Siddique.
The education and related sectors have got an allocation of Tk 32.99 crore (10.49 per cent) that was Tk 31.50.08 crore (10.44per cent) of the total budget.
Meanwhile, the lion’s share of the budget, Tk 204.54 crores (64.04 per cent), has been allocated for the salaries of the teachers, officials and employees, and also Tk 37.50 crore (11.92 per cent) as their pension facilities.
The allocation for salaries was at Tk 192.75 (63.91 per cent) of the total budget and Tk 39.00 (12.93 per cent) for pensions in FY 2012-13.
The rest of the budget would be expended for repairing, preservation and maintenance.
The University Grants Commission, however, increased its allocation to Tk 259.50 crores from Tk 240.70 crores of the last year and the internal income remained the same as last year’s Tk 31.00 crores.
The deficit reduced to Tk 24.03 from Tk 29.93 last year.
