A group of women in Barisal city on Wednesday formed a human chain protesting against
Hefazat leader Shafi’s recent comment made on women.
They also demanded his arrest and trial.
The programme was organised by the alliance of NGOs under the banner of Sammilita Nari O Sachetan Nagarik Samaj in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall at the city centre.
Rabeya Khatun, president of Mahila Parishad Barisal unit, presided over the rally.
Among others, Kohinur Begum, AL leader and city corporation councillor, Shah Sajeda, professor of Govt BM College, Nigar Sultana Hanufa and AK Azad, CPB leaders, Akkas Hossain, pro-AL cultural activists, Prof M Moazzem Hossain, TIB activist, Anowar Zahid, NGO organiser, addressed the programme.
Condemning the ‘derogatory’ anti-women remarks of Allama Shafi, the speakers and participants of the programme said it was their moral rights to protest at such remarks.
Shafi might be an erudite person, but he was sharing his knowledge in a perverse manner, they said.
Referring to Islam, the speakers said that Islam has a glorious history and tradition of honouring women.
When Bangladesh is emerging as a model of women empowerment, Shafi’s comment only suggested that he wanted to see the country as Afghanistan, they added.
They regarded his
comment as obscene, crude and humiliating for women.
