The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Thursday urged the political parties not to call any more general strike in
Ramadan, the fasting month for Muslims, and expressed its deep
concern over the sufferings people faced in the last four general strikes in as many days.
‘We urge the political parties not to call any more strike in Ramadan as
hartal hampers business and overall economy
of the country,’ FBCCI president Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed said at a press briefing at the office of the apex trade body in the capital.
Akram said it was the first time the general strike was enforced in the month of Ramadan in the country.
The FBCCI president said the four-day strike disrupted the supply chain of goods and commodities.
He said, ‘The business activities in the rural areas are being hampered most due to the general strikes as more than 70 per cent business in a year in the areas take place on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.’
‘We the business people on different occasions have requested the government to impose ban on hartal. But, no political party has taken it seriously,’ he said.
FBCCI first vice-president Monowara Hakim Ali and vice-president Helal Uddin were present, among others, in the briefing.
