The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology authorities on Monday night evacuated the residents of a female dormitory after several cracks developed on its wall.
Campus sources said the university authorities rented a four-storey building near the main entrance of the university at Akhalia and allotted the rooms among 100 female students as an effort to cope up the accommodation crisis.
Residents of the rented hall, run by the management of the First Ladies Hall of the university, got panicked on Monday afternoon after they saw several cracks on the wall.
Informed, the university authorities reached the spot and started moving the residents of the rented dormitory to a safe place.
Talking to New Age, First Ladies Hall acting provost Mahruba Sharmin Chowdhury informed that the residents of the rented hall were moved to the First Ladies Hall and Begum Sirajunness Hall within the night.
‘Temporarily the rented hall residents have been accommodated in the common rooms of the two ladies halls and the problem will also be addressed as soon as possible,’ said acting provost.
She said the authorities would make a decision regarding the dormitory after getting the assessment report being prepared by engineering section of the university.
