American scholar presents art in the US
American art scholar Auburn E Elise demonstrated the contemporary art trend in the US at the Dhaka Art Centre on Friday.
Displaying images of some contemporary works, the audio-visual presentation anaylsed the themes dealt with by the contemporary artists in the USA and also mediums they use.
Artist Auburn E Elise, who completed her doctorate in contemporary art, gave the observation that racism has been an important theme for many US artists, especially the black ones.
In the lecture E Elise displayed some innovative works featuring racism by the Afro-American artists like Kewa Walse, Betye Saar and others.
The contemporary artists in the US also address the various other social issues such as problems of metro life, the art critic said.
Giving reference to Gain Turk’s installation, created in 2012 with wasted metal and plastic, E Elise showed how interestingly the contemporary artists deal with common problems such as hassles in the commuter train.
Following the age old tradition, Auburn E Elise said, many contemporary artists create artworks upholding the spirit of American nationalism.
But, the materials used by them are very modern, she said.
E Elise further informed that digital painting as medium getting popular these days. And the artists, who use classic mediums such acrylic or watercolour, are trying to give 3D expressions of their works.
A good number of audience enjoyed her speech. Naim Rahman Turjo, a fine art student, said ‘It’s an insightful and well communicative lecture.’
