The prices of onion, sugar, ginger and milk powder witnessed fresh rise in the city’s retail markets on Tuesday due to an increased demand ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals for Muslims.
The Eid will be celebrated on Friday or Saturday.
The prices of vegetables, however, remained stable on adequate supply, traders said.
They said that the prices of onion, sugar and ginger rose due to an increased demand ahead of Eid.
The price of milk powder increased as the producers of the commodity raised its price ahead of Eid, they said.
Onion price increased by Tk 2 a kilogram in the last two days. The local onion was selling at Tk 50-Tk 52 a kg on Tuesday while the imported onion was selling at Tk 48 a kg.
The price of sugar increased by Tk 2 a kg and the commodity was selling at Tk 50 a kg.
Zakir Hossain, a retailer at the Karwan Bazar kitchen market, told New Age that a quarter of businessmen stocked the item to gain more profit ahead of Eid.
Although the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh have been selling sugar at Tk 43 a kg but the TCB operation has failed to put impact on the market, he said.
The price of imported ginger increased by Tk 10 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 100 a kg.
The price of milk powder increased by Tk 20-Tk 40 a kg and it was selling at Tk 620-Tk 660 a kg.
Fish, beef, mutton and broiler were selling at high prices on the retail markets.
Rohita was selling at Tk 300–Tk 450 a kg on Tuesday, katla at Tk 280–Tk 400 a kg, pangas at Tk 200–Tk 300 a kg and tilapia at Tk 180–Tk 225 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
Beef was selling at Tk 300 a kg and mutton was selling at Tk 450 a kg.
The price of broiler remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 160 a kg on the day.
