Eid shopping reached its peak in the capital with huge turnout of shoppers in posh and luxurious shopping malls as well as in the hawkers and footpath markets, with only three days left for Eid-ul-Fitr.
Ignoring rough weather marked by intermittent rains, the Eid shoppers on Tuesday thronged almost all markets, shopping centres and makeshift shops on footpaths in a bid to complete their shopping before going home for celebrating Eid with their relatives.
As the day was public holiday, the Eid shoppers, especially government, non-government and private job holders along with their family members, went to the shopping centres.
‘I could not come for Eid shopping with my family earlier as I was very busy with my job. Today (Tuesday) I have come early to the market with a view to completing Eid shopping for my family members,’ Tanjimul Karim, a private job holder, told New Age at the New Market.
‘I would not get more time for shopping as I have planned to leave for my village home in Barisal Wednesday morning to celebrate Eid,’ he added.
Posh shopping malls and traditional markets on Tuesday were found brimming with shoppers.
According to the salesmen of different shops of the markets, shoppers are now giving priority to saris, punjabi, different readymade garment items for ladies and gents, cosmetic items and ornaments.
In the kids’ corners of each shopping mall, parents were seen desperately looking for suitable clothing for their kids.
New Market, a traditional shopping centre of Dhaka, was found crammed with shoppers of all ages at 11:00am and the sellers were seen busy attending their clients.
While visiting the New Elephant Road, it was found that the people, mostly from middle and upper classes, were passing hectic time to buy readymade garments, shoes and other Eid items in various markets and shops.
Bashundhara shopping complex on Panthapath was found crowded in the afternoon on Tuesday.
A crowd of stylish young chaps was noticed at Cat’s Eye, a renowned men’s wear brand, of the market.
Sumon, a university student, has come to buy something special for Eid, said ‘Cat’s Eye is the best if you want to get something exclusive for Eid because its items are special,’
Anwar Hossain, a salesman of local brand Artistic, that they were experiencing huge crowds from Tuesday afternoon.
‘The trendy shoppers are buying shirts, pants, Kurta, panjabi, Fatua, footwear, walet, tai, perfume from our shop,’ he added.
Shoppers of low-income groups, however, were found rushing to the city’s Gulisthan, Nurjahan Market and Gaosia markets for their Eid shopping mainly for affordable prices.
