Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association on Sunday sought all documents relating to the environmental clearance certificate given by Department of #environment for the proposed Rampal Power Plant near the Sundarban under the Right to Information Act.
The department recently gave the environmental clearance certificate to the proposed coal-based power plant, a joint-venture initiative between Bangladesh and India, aimed at produce 1320 megawatt power.
Different quarters are protesting against the proposed project saying that it would destroy the Sunbdarban.
BELA sought all the documents including Environmental Impact Assessment report, environmental clearance certificate, copy of the minutes of the meeting of the department that approved decided to issue the certificate.
BELA also sought for the records of the Environmental Impact Assessment reports the Power Development Board had earlier sent to the Department of Environment on seven occasions for the approval and the reasons on which the department had rejected the reports.
It also sought for the records of weighing public opinion on the Environmental Impact Assessment report before the issuance of the certificate.
As the project site is close to mangrove forest Sundarbans BELA has been opposing the project.
Its officials are saying that it will harm bio-diversity of the forest and endangered the Royal Bengal Tiger further.
