The life of contemporary human beings is greatly influenced by automations. This influence has been depicted by two artists—Mustafa Zaman and Rafiqul Shuvo who came together in a duet art exhibition.
The 12-day art show titled Automated Subjectivity is currently being held at the Bengal Art Lounge at Gulshan 1 in the capital.
Fifty three artworks done in mixed media are on display at the exhibition.
Mustafa Zaman’s artwork series ‘Caught in the Shadow Between the Eyes’ has been done by digital print and pen drawing. The artist has photographed his shadow and printed the images on paper. ‘I sketched human motions in those images and tried to reveal the beauty of human physique,’ said Zaman while describing his artworks to New Age.
Another displayed work by Zaman that commands attention is ‘Last dance from the Lost Age’, where the artist has projected a video clip of a silly dance sequence from a Bangla cinema on the plain surface of two common household clothing irons. The video reflected on the metal surface creates a glow that arrests the eyes of the visitors. ‘Through the artwork, I have tried to demonstrate the silliness of modern world people who are engrossed with impractical things. I have used clothing irons to reveals the heat of the youth of this modern era,’ shared Zaman.
Shuvo, on the other hand, has revealed the condition of artists in present world Bangladesh through his artwork titled ‘Living Best Artist in Dhaka City’. The artwork is actually a photograph of a man wearing shorts, his face masked by a piece of fabric, his feet standing on a brick placed on a railing of a high-rise building and a horizontal pole tied to his shoulders and stretched arms, replicating the stance of a crucified Christ.
‘The man precariously standing on the railing symbolises the vulnerability of the career of an artist in Bangladesh,’ Shuvo explained his particular work. ‘The hiding face of the man emphasises the problems an artist often faces because of his chosen profession,’ added Shuvo.
‘Gift for John’ is another series of artworks where Shuvo has tried to connect himself to global art. In this particular series, the artist has printed out the images of noted American artist Andy Warhol and drawn outlines on the image with pencils.
Inaugurated on August 22, the show will be open for everybody from 12:00 to 8:00pm till September 02.
