Tazin Ahmed is familiar face in the media. From stage to small screen, she is seemingly at ease in every role she plays. Of late, Tazin has attained recognition as a vivacious TV show host as well.
Rumi Rahman has been active in the contemporary music scene over the last 20 years. He has been a member (drummer) of leading bands, including ARK, Arthohin, Dalchhut and Janmobhumi (currently with the last one). Rumi has also been working with pop sensation Habib, and has written, composed several popular songs. Among the A-list artistes Rumi has worked with are: SI Tutul, Bappa Majumdar and Fahmida Nabi.
During a recent conversation with Tazin and Rumi, it was evident that the duo are deeply in love with each other. The artiste couple had an informal wedding and will have a formal reception in August.
Tazin: “We’ve known each other since we were in school. He was my classmate at Udayan School. We weren’t that close to be considered ‘friends.’ He had his circle of friends, and I had mine, but we were always in touch. Our friendship grew when I joined the media. Last year, out of the blue he proposed. My initial answer, however, was no.”
Rumi: “I tried to explain to her that it’s quite difficult to live a lonely life. Besides, out society is not hospitable to people living on their own. And I told her that if she had to choose someone, I could be a good option. I meant that!”
Tazin (smilingly): “When I shared this with my mother (who is very fond of Rumi), she was ecstatic! From then on everything just sort of happened… and now, as I get to know him more closely, I realise it was the right decision.”
“And it seems my mother cares more for him than I do…She is always cooking what Rumi likes,” Tazin adds.
Rumi struggles to find words, articulating what Tazin means to her: “For me, she is always with me, even when she is not around. She is a kind of inspiration. I’m more focused than ever. For years, I had confined my creativity to playing drums. She gave me the confidence that I could write and compose songs. I’m not a good speaker. She has changed my life for better. People often mistakenly label her as a ‘hardened’ woman but I find her extremely caring and loving.”
Tazin shares her discoveries too: “Rumi is not an open book. I had to explore different sides of him and I made the discoveries gradually. I liked that experience. He appears childlike. He is fun loving and very popular among his friends. But when he is writing a song, he is a totally different person — profound and mature. After going over a song written by him, artiste Fahmida Nabi asked if it was really his writing.”
Common interests? Tazin was quick to answer: “Music, of course. We both love music. He creates tunes and I eat it up. I grew up in a musically oriented family; my mother and aunts used to sing. Unlike a lot of rock/pop musicians, Rumi has a deep understanding of classical music. I’m truly impressed by that.”
Rumi is a fan of Tazin’s acting. He never misses any of her plays and follows her to shooting locations whenever it’s possible. However, Rumi will be busy with his USA tour this month where he will join the FOBANA Convention along with Habib. Tazin will also be busy with a new daily soap, “The Family” on Banglavishion and other works.
