Plight and struggle of the fishermen community have been depicted in Nikhoj Mohajoner Sondhaney staged by Sushamo Natya Sampradaya on Sunday at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakla Academy.
Through the tragic life of a lost fishermen community leader known as Mohajon among his fellow fishermen, Khondoker Anwarul Islam’s play presents lives and hardships, fate and fight of the fishermen’s community of the southern part of Bangladesh.
Mohajon’s character in the play is in fact a symbol in the play to portray the bitter facts of the poor community. It illustrates the fact that they go for fishing in the deep sea or rivers at the risk of their lives, but they don’t get the benefit of their hard work.
Young actors of the troupe aptly portrayed the picture of middlemen or Mohajon’s exploitations on the poor community.
Sushamo Natya Sampradaya’s 10th production Nikhoj Mohajoner Sondhaney is not, however, a melodrama. Khondoker Anwarul Islam as the director has composed some entertaining scenes relevant to the life and culture of the community.
The set, the lighting and the theatre performance was hand-in-hand that helped to narrate the story on the fishermen community in the southern part of the country.
‘Fishermen have always been a marginalised section of our society. I have tried to portray that walk of life and their hardships in the play’, said Anwarul Islam.
The audience, who watched the play, however, did not like the presentation much.
‘The theme was good, but the actors lacked in spontaneity. It was an average production’, observed Gulzar Hossain, a theatre activist, after the show.
‘The portrayal of the relief scenes appeared as ornamented comedy, which rather destroyed the grandness of the plot’, said Habibur Rahman from the audience.
