Celebrated Indian artist Ganesh Haloi is displaying his latest works in a fund rising exhibition at the Bangal Shilpalaya at Dhanmondi in the capital.
With the proceedings of the show, jointly organised by Bengal Gallery and Kolkata based art gallery Akar Prokar, the artist wants to raise fund for a cultural center he wants to build in Jamalpur.
It was Jamalpur where Ganesh Haloi was born in 1936 and left India with his family in 1950 following a series of riots after the partition of the subcontinent.
Sixty-five water-colour paintings have been accommodated in that 12-day exhibition titled Rhythm of Reality that was inaugurated on August 28.
Haloi used geometric shapes in an array of vivid colours including blue, red and orange for his paintings. Some of his paintings are done with bold brush strokes of black on white paper, while there are some paintings where Haloi has used delicate black lines that might seem to have been done with pen and not water-colour, portraying circles and treelike figures. However, the one thing that is common in all the paintings of Haloi is simplicity. The artworks are all untitled and are abstract in nature though the viewers can find resemblance of the typical screens of Bangla in some of them.
Such a painting is Untitled 23 which depicts yellow squares having green mazes resembling the view of a paddy field occupied with ripe, golden paddy of rural Bangla.
Simple brush strokes of green depicting a tree arrests the eyes of the visitors while they come across Untitled 16. Black triangular shapes of mountains with blue clouds hovering on top depicts a complete picture of a hilly region in monsoon season.
And the 28th number of the untitled series presents the serenity of nature in a rainy evening with subtle use of bright romantic colours such as green and blue. Most interesting aspect of the canvas is creating the image of downpour artistically with subtle use of ash colour.
The watery effect of a monsoon day is enhancced by the use of watercolour in this painting.
The exhibition will remain open for everyone from 12:00 to 8:00pm till September 08.
