The price of onion remained high in the city’s retail markets over the week ending Friday despite the fact that the private sector and the government were importing the item from India, Myanmar and China. Traders said the prices of onion marked fresh rise over the week on the wholesale market. The local onion was retailing at Tk 65-Tk 67 a kg while the imported onion was retailing at Tk 70 a kg on Friday.
Traders said that the wholesale prices of local onion increased by Tk 3-Tk 5 a kg on Friday due to supply shortage.
Abul Kalam Azad, a wholesaler and importer at Shambazar told New Age that instead of India, the supply of Myanmar and China onion increased in the market as imports from India has decreased due to high prices.
He said the onion imported from Myanmar and China were selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg and Tk 38-Tk 40 a kg on the wholesale market on Friday.
The wholesale price of local onion increased to Tk 52-Tk 53 a kg from Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg on the day, Azad said.
Despite smooth supply, most of the vegetables prices remained high.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg, papaya at Tk 30 a kg, okra at Tk 40 a kg and bitter gourd at Tk 60 a kg on Friday.
The price of green chilli decreased by Tk 20 a kg and was selling at Tk 60 a kg on the day.
The prices of fish witnessed decreasing trend as the supply of Hilsa increased in the markets.
Rohita was selling at Tk 250–Tk 300 a kg on Friday from Tk 220–Tk 300 a kg a week before, pangas at Tk 180–Tk 250 a kg and tilapia at Tk 160–Tk 200 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The prices of Hilsa decreased by Tk 30-Tk 50 a kg and was selling at Tk 450-Tk 500 a kg weighting about 700-800 gram.
The Hilsa weighing around 1 kg was selling at Tk 600-Tk 700 a kg on Friday.
The price of broiler decreased by Tk 10 a kg and it was selling at Tk 145 a kg over the week ending Friday.
The prices of beef and mutton remained unchanged and beef was selling at Tk 280-Tk 300 a kg and mutton at Tk 450 a kg on the day.
Sugar price decreased by Tk 2 a kg and it was retailing at Tk 46-Tk 48 a kg in the city’s retail markets.
Unpacked soya bean was retailing at Tk 120 a kg and super palm oil at Tk 80 a kg over the week ending Friday.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) decreased by Tk 10 and was selling at Tk 615–Tk 625 on the day.
Red lentil, imported from Turkey and Canada, was selling at Tk 75–Tk 85 a kg.
The price of fine variety of red lentil called ‘kangaroo’ was selling at Tk 120 a kg while the local variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
The price of egg remained unchanged and was selling at Tk 32 a hali (four pieces).
The imported garlic was selling at Tk 70 a kg while the local garlic was retailing at Tk 90 a kg.
The price of ginger remained unchanged and was selling at Tk 160 a kg on the day.
The price of potato remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 18 a kg on Friday.
The prices of rice remained high despite decrease of wholesale prices.
Fine varieties of Miniket and Najirshail rice were selling at Tk 46-Tk 48 a kg and Tk 52-Tk 54 a kg respectively, BR-28 at between Tk 40 and Tk 45 a kg and coarse varieties at Tk 34 a kg on the city’s retail markets on Friday.
