Archer Emdadul Haque Milon picked up Bangladesh’s first medal in the history of the Islamic Solidarity Games when won the silver medal in the 70-metre Olympic recurve event in Indonesia on Thursday.
Egypt’s Ahmed Al Imri won the gold medal, besting Milon in the final round. Another Egyptian, Ibrahim Subri, won the bronze medal. Bangladeshi athletes had failed to find any success during the first four days of the ongoing games before Milon’s silver medal performance. Milon and Ram Krishna Shaha had struggled in the team archery event just two days earlier.
Milon first captured the country’s attention in 2009 when he won gold at the Asian Youth Olympic Continental Qualification and came second at the Asian Grand Prix in Dhaka.
He finished 7th at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and went on to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where he finished 54th among 64 participants.
More recently, Milon won bronze in the individual event at the Bangladesh Games in April.
Before the start of the Islamic Solidarity Games, Milon had promised a good show. He appears to have made good on his promise.
Bangladeshi athletes did not medal during the first Islamic Solidarity Games, which were held in Saudi Arabia in 2005. The second edition was supposed to be held in Iran in 2010 but was cancelled after a dispute arose between Iran and the Arab countries over the use of the term ‘Persian Gulf’ on literature and on the medals.
