A court here in Chittagong awarded capital punishment to a man for killing his wife over dowry. The court also fined him Taka one lakh in the same verdict. The man was identified as Rashedul Islam Chowdhury, 35. The Judge of Chittagong Woman and Child Repression Control Tribunal-3 Sharif Mostafa Karim handed down the verdict on Monday. Advocate Bhabatosh Nath, special public prosecutor of the tribunal, said that the tribunal awarded highest punishment death penalty under section 11 (a) of Woman and Child Repression Control Act as the prosecution was successful to prove the charge against the accused. “The court ordered to pay the fine amount to the daughter of the victim”, he added.
Our court sources said Rashedul Islam Chowdhury, resident of Sattaroa Sarker Taluk area under Mirasarai upazila in Chittagong, got married to Tahmina Sultana Boby, resident of Alokdia area in Feni district, in 2007. After marriage Rashed started torturing Boby for bringing money from her parents for going to Dubai. At the stake of torture Boby’s family arrange money to send Rashed to Dubai.
But, after one year he returned from Dubai and started torturing Boby for dowry once again. Meanwhile Boby gave birth to a baby girl. On October 9 in 2009, Rashed and Boby got involved in an altercation and following that Rashed strangled Boby on October 10 and went into hiding.
After investigating the case police filed charge sheet on January 31, 2010 and the court framed charge against the accused Rashed on October 5, 2011. After recording testimonies of five witnesses the court passed the verdict on Monday in absence of the convicted as he has been fugitive since after the murder.
