Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy pays tribute to recently demised actor Anwar Hossain organising a three-day film screening session featuring
four films starred by Hossain.
The festival began on Thursday at the Studio Theatre Hall of the academy through screening of Khan Ataur Rahman’s historical film Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah, acting in which Anwar Hossain got nationwide popularity. The festival also features Anwar Hossain starred films Lathiyal, Palonko and Jiban Theke Niya.
A moderate number of viewers enjoyed Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah featuring the fall of the last Nawab at the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to the British East India Company resulting the introduction to the British imperialism in the subcontinent.
The film was screened following a brief inaugural session in which secretary of the education ministry Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury was present as the chief guest. The programme was presided over by the director General of the academy Liaquat Ali Lucky.
Two films acted by Hossain will be screened today at the festival: Lathiyal, directed by Mita, will be screened today at 4:30pm following by the screening of Rajen Tarafdar’s film Palonko at 6:30pm at the Studio Theatre Hall.
Zahir Raihan’s classic Jiban Theke Niya, a political satire based on the Language Movement in 1952, will be screened at 6:30pm tomorrow at the same venue.
The viewers can enjoy all the films for free.
Anwar Hossain made his debut in Tomar Amar in 1961 and two years later played the role of the hero in Salauddin’s Surja Snyan. His performance in Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula placed him permanently in the heart of millions of movie lovers. In his acting career spanning over five decades Hossain acted in over 500 films. Hossain died on September 13, 2013 from old age complications.
