The friends and family members of the late artist Sohrab Rahman Khan have organised a three-day commemorative exhibition featuring Khan’s paintings at the Bengal Art Lounge in Gulshan.
An amateur artist Sohrab Rahman Khan, who was a teacher of the economics department at the American International University, had never exhibited his artworks in his lifetime.Though Sohrab Rahman Khan took preparation for exhibiting his artworks, but his dream never came true due to his untimely demise at the age of 38 on last June 20 following a cardiac arrest.
The exhibition titled Castles in the Sky has been named after the title of one of Khan’s favourite song, said his brother Jeeshan khan.
Truly he creates but not in the sky but beside a river in his painting Untitled 29. The bowing trees on from the both sides of a road create an image like a castle in his spectacular painting Untitled 25.
He also creates the image of Castles through the natural elements in his paintings of the Untitled series of 14, 15, 16, 17.
The exhibition showcases 61 untitled artworks in different mediums such as watercolour, oil on canvas, and charcoal and pen drawings.
Special aspects of Sohrab’s paintings are the use of bold brush strokes to express the inner energy of his subjects including natural beauty, street scenes, people, architecture and animals.
His landscape painting Untitled 01 depicts the panoramic view of a busy street, on the both sides of which the artist draws big trees.
Images of elephant are common elements in some of his works through which Sohrab creates some absurd images. In untitled 08, Sohrab has depicted a whirling wave of sea-water above which an elephant- pulled chariot is visible with a passenger.
He also experiments with the image of the gigantic animal in Untitled works 26 and 28.
Some of Sohrab’s paintings are surreal and abstract. For instance, Untitled 02 presents different elements of nature like man, trees, birds, fish, rivers, crocodile all together in a surrealistic manner.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Friday and will end today.
