Bangla Academy celebrated the 84th birth anniversary of the leading poet of contemporary Bangla literature Shamsur Rahman, a day before his birthday through organising a commemorative programme at the Poet Shamsur Rahman auditorium of Bangla Academy on Tuesday.
The programme featured a discussion session in which the contemporary poets analysed life and works of Shamsur Rahman. The discussion was followed by a poetry recitation session where upcoming poets recited their own poems dedicated in the memory of the poet.
Invited poet from India Amrita Maiti and local poet Ashim Saha delivered their speeches on Shamsur Rahman at the discussion session that was presided over by Shamsuzzaman Khan, director general of Bangla Academy.
In his speech, Shamsuzzaman Khan observed that Shamsur Rahman pioneered a new trend of modern poetry in Bangla literature. His poetry is informative and at the same time entertaining. Khan also observed that there will be no match for the poet even in the distant future.
Amrita Maiti, in his speech, observed that the way Shamsur Rahman depicted the lifestyle of the Bangladeshi middle class in his poetry is very unique. Maiti also shared that the poet had a quality of creating word pictures that would allow the readers to easily visualise the narratives in the poems. He also observed that Bangladesh was lucky to have a poet like Shamsur Rahman. Poet Ashim Saha also gave an account of the life of the poet in his informative speech.
At the poetry recitation session poet Arindo Chakraborty recited his poem Amar Ekjon Ekjon-e Achhe; while Arnob Hasan Mahmud entertained the audience with his poem Amader Banolata Sen. Sanjib Purohit received loud appreciation for the presentation of his English poem Take a Pinch of Me. Farhan Nishat recited his poem Chabiti Hotath Dekhlo Talati Taar Prochesta Nicchena. Soummo Sarkar and Biren Mukherjee presented Nodi Tumi Khuda O Trishna Dhore Rekho and Joler Karukaj, respectively. Poet Tapan Bagchi recited Sudhonno Nadir Kanchhe and Jatra Kahini.
Poet Shamsur Rahman (October 23, 1929 – August 17, 2006) emerged in the later half of the 20th century and authored more than 60 collections of poems including Prothom Gaan Ditio Mrityur Agey, Roudro Karotitey, Biddhosto Nilima, Je Andho Sundori Kadey and Deshodrohi Hote Ichchhey Korey. As a poet Rahman upheld humanism, human relations, romanticism, democracy, satire on religious fundamentalism and more.
He was also a columnist and a journalist in his lifetime.
