Information minister Hasanul Haque Inu on Friday said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will invite the Leader of the Opposition, Khaleda Zia, for fresh talks anytime now. “The Prime Minister may call the BNP chairperson anytime over telephone for a dialogue,” the minister told reporters at a workshop in Gulshan. The Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are holding “official and unofficial” talks at the same time, said Inu without elaborating further, hinting at the efforts towards reaching a settlement on the current impasse over the interim government to supervise the next poll. “I hope the ongoing
political crisis will get resolved through discussions. If our proposal is not accepted and the Opposition does not come forward for talks, we will move the court, if necessary,” he said.
Describing Khaleda’s statement — which termed the present government as being “illegal” from Friday — as unconstitutional, the information minister said the BNP chief ought to withdraw her remarks.
Earlier, on October 23, the Prime Minister informed her Cabinet members at a weekly meeting that
she would telephone the Leader of the Opposition and talk about forming an all-party government to oversee the next parliamentary election.
