A two-day workshop on ‘Adaptation to the Impact of Climate Change on Socio-economic Conditions of Bangladesh, began in the capital Saturday.
Alumni Association of German Universities in Bangladesh (AAGUB) is hosting the workshop in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service and Goethe Institute, Dhaka and Garman Embassy in Dhaka.
Dhaka University (DU) Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the workshop as chief guest while AAGUB president Prof Dr Muhammad Qumrul Hasan chaired the session.
Among others, Deputy Head of the Mission of German Embassy Ferdinand von Weyhe and Principal Adviser of German Development Cooperation (GIZ) Hans-Joachim Hermann addressed as guest of honour. Prof Siddique said Bangladesh is the worst sufferer of global climate change.
Referring to a research findings conducted by Centre for International Forestry Research of Indonesia Prof Siddique said overall global temperature is expected to rise between 1.40 degrees Celsius and 5.80 degrees Celsius over the next century.
He said the earth experienced approximately 0.70 degrees Celsius increase in temperature over the last century and it could be even more dangerous, if the issue couldn’t be addressed properly.
However, the professor underscored the need for growing awareness among the people so that they could adapt with the changing climate that also could lower the risk.
