Aimed at building awareness on internet services among the people, a countrywide internet mela (fair) would begin on November 16. Cellular phone operator Robi in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, the Ministry of Information, and the Ministry of Health and Family Planning has organised the month-long fair.The internet mela, which is the first private-public partnership initiative of its kind, will cover 500 colleges in 429 thanas across Bangladesh.
The announcement came from a press conference on Saturday at a city hotel where ICT minister Mostafa Faruque Mohammad was present as chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the ICT minister said mobile phone revolution has been started during the tenure of the present government and now the people of the country is getting access to communicate across the globe instantly.
He said the students, teachers and parents would get opportunity to involve with internet in the fair that might build awareness about internet.
The minister urged other cellphone operators and IT companies to move forward to hold such kind of event.
The internet mela is scheduled to conclude by December.
The Robi 3.5G Internet Mela will be held at each of the 500 college fields and will feature experience booths for the visitors to experience the internet for themselves. Through this fair, youth of every single thana will be able to access the internet and experience the power of data connectivity.
Moreover there will be a health camp from where the visitors can receive a free health check-up. Besides, there will be ICT ministry corner where the initiatives and success of the government will be displayed before the visitors.
The Internet Mela will also feature a ‘Teachers Parents Advocacy’ booth for students and teachers where they can be briefed on Robi products and services, and an HR Consultancy booth run by Prothom Alo Jobs at selected locations to collect CVs from interested students and provide advice to them how to apply for jobs.
Speaking at the event, the Robi CMO, Pradeep Shrivastava, thanked the officials of the various ministries for their all-out support in the initiative.
‘The Robi 3.5G Internet Mela will drive the connectivity of our great country to the world and will in turn help to build a
knowledge-based society,’ he added.
ICT secretary NI Khan, information secretary Martuza Ahmed, additional secretary of health ministry Ayubur Rahman Khan and Mahtabuddin Ahmed, chief financial officer of Robi, among others, were present on the occasion.
